Drop-in meditation at Wabash College
No experience in meditation is necessary to participate in our drop-in meditation groups, but we do recommend reading some of the resources provided ( on our Getting Started in Meditation page) as you consider starting a meditation practice. All of the drop-in groups are free and open to our local community.
If you need to arrive late or need to leave early, know that you are welcome to come after the start of meditation, or to leave before the end of meditation.
Mindful Monday (noon to 1pm)
Neil organizes a free, drop-in meditation group that meets at Wabash College in Baxter Hall (room 212), usually over the lunch hour on Mondays. Meditation begins at 12:10pm, and ends at 12:40pm. Afterwards, we end with some informal discussion of meditation practice.
If people arrive before 12:10pm, we usually begin with an informal check-in, and then invite people to take a seat around 12:10. Meditation begins with three bells, and we sit silently for 30 minutes. The end of the meditation period is marked by ringing one bell.
Indy Community Yoga – Tuesday/Thursday (7-7:30am)
On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, we will meet from 7 to 7:30am in Baxter 114, joining (virtually) with a local group, Indy Community Yoga for their online meditation.
Sanshin Zen Community – Wednesday (meditation: 6:30 to 7pm, book discussion: 7-8pm)
On Wednesday evenings, we sit for 30 minutes (6:30 to 7pm), meeting in Baxter Hall (room 114) at Wabash College, joining the Sanshin Zen Community virtually (using Zoom).
- At Sanshin, people sit facing the wall during meditation.
- Before sitting, people bow with their hands placed palms together (in gassho) to their cushion/chair when they arrive at their seat, and then turn and bow to the room.
- Meditation begins at 6:30pm with three bells, and ends at 7pm with one bell.
- At the end of meditation, they with straighten their cushion/seat, and then turn back to the room.
- Once everyone is ready, they will bow as a group.
- If you are interested in more information about the forms for meditation at Sanshin, a longer overview is available on the Sanshin website (see the first section, labeled “zazen”)
- Book discussion: Sanshin also has a book discussion group that meets on Wednesdays after meditation (from 7-8pm). Anyone who is interested is welcome to stay after meditation to join the group. The next book will be “The Roots of Goodness,” a translation of a text by Dogen, the founder of Japanese Soto Zen, and a commentary by a modern Zen teacher, Kosho Uchiyama.
Local meditation groups
West Lafayette Zen group
A Soto Zen group meets at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tippecanoe County on Saturday mornings to meditate at 8:30am. If you would like to learn more about the group, email Neil (neil@mindfulinmoco.com) and we can send you the contact information for the group.
Resources: Getting Started in Meditation
If you are new to meditation, we have some resources that we would recommend (focused on meditation in the Zen and Vipassana traditions, as well as mindfulness meditation) on our Getting Started in Meditation page.
